Note: The number of students actually using Spoken English Learned Quickly is far greater than the statistics indicate. Because the course may be fully downloaded, most students study off-line by loading the course on their personal computer. In addition, we encourage individuals to copy and sell the course for their own profit, resulting in many students using the course who have never visited our web site. We also know that CDs containing the entire course are being used in classroom teaching. Spoken English Learned Quickly is now the world's most widely distributed English course.
Our statistics only show the number of visitors who have downloaded material during one month. However, the actual number of students using Spoken English Learned Quickly is the total of all students who are studying from lessons downloaded in any previous month, plus all the new students who are using material downloaded during this month. At present, we estimate that there are more students using Spoken English Learned Quickly because they have purchased a CD from a third party, than there are who have visited our website. We will never know how many students are actually using the course, but the numbers are growing very rapidly world-wide.
How do we know what is happening? First, we are using KBytes of download as our primary source of information. Monitoring visits does not tell us how extensively the site is being used. However, monitoring KBytes of downloaded information tells us exactly how much material is being used each month. Secondly, in addition to direct correspondence with some using the Spoken English Learned Quickly lessons, we can monitor these trends through our monthly statistic site. Most of our web site visitors download the entire course rather than using individual lessons. Also, MP3 audio recordingswhich are used to make CDs for portable players or directly downloaded to MP3 playersare downloaded more frequently than the audio files used for computer use. (Only 19% are downloaded as .wma files, whereas 81% are downloaded as .mp3 files.)
Some will want to know how many pages are represented in the graph's KByte download figures. It would be impossible to calculate that figure each month, so we will merely supply a formula which gives an approximation. During one month, we summed the total number of .htm, .html, .wma, .mp3, and printable .pdf pages viewed. (Our .pdf documents have multiple printable pages. For example, 360 pages of lesson text are contained in only 16 .pdf "pages." Consequently, we multiplied each .pdf document viewed times the total number of printable pages in that document.) We then divided the total KBytes of download for that month by the total viewed and printable pages. At best, this is an inexact figure because .html pages are small as compared with other types of pages (or extensions). Nonetheless, because this course requires that audio and .pdf pages be opened in conjunction with most .html pages, the ratio remains somewhat constant. In round and inexact numbers:
95 KBytes equal one downloaded page.
1,000,000 KBytes equal 10,500 downloaded pages.
We are delighted that so many are using Spoken English Learned Quickly and that copies of the lessons are being sold in increasingly large numbers. We hope that many around the world will successfully learn to speak English using this course. |
