If You Are Teaching Spoken English Learned Quickly . . . |
The SPOKEN ENGLISH LEARNED QUICKLY course was designed so that it can be used by a Teacher who wants to help others learn English. The Teacher may also use the course to earn money. Spoken Language International (SLI) places no restriction on what the Teacher charges the student as long as it complies with our Terms of Use. The Teacher does not pay money to SLI in order to use the course. The Teacher can never represent him or herself as being a part of SLI. (See the Shortened Terms of Use statement below. Click on Terms of Use to see the full statement.)
All our materials may be freely downloaded and reproduced for sale or institutional use. See our Earn money page. The recorded lessons may be downloaded in MP3 format for burning CDs. See our Lesson Downloads page.
We encourage the Teacher to carefully read the INSTRUCTOR'S GUIDE for suggestions about teaching the course.
It is best for the Teacher when a student is successfully learning to speak English. A student who is satisfied will continue coming to the Teacher. A satisfied student will also encourage others to contact the Teacher for lessons.
Students will learn spoken English in the shortest period of time if they study alone with the recorded audio lessons. Therefore, for adult learners, we discourage "daily" classes. Rather, we suggest that the Teacher supply each student with the lesson materials (or have the students use their own computer at www.FreeEnglishNow.com) to study alone during the week. The Teacher can then hold a single class for one or two hours each week for a group of 10 or fewer students. Of course, if the teacher has 50 students, the Teacher would conduct at least 5 classes each week.
(These SPOKEN ENGLISH LEARNED QUICKLY lessons are also very effective for younger learners. However, children and young teens respond best to the structure of a daily class. See the INSTRUCTOR'S GUIDE for suggestions when using these lessons in a classroom with younger learners.)
If the Teacher wants to earn an income using SPOKEN ENGLISH LEARNED QUICKLY, more money can be earned with many students paying a small amount while they study on their own than can be earned with a few students who are attending daily classes.
The Teacher will get more students who will pay for extra teaching by advertising the FREE web site course www.FreeEnglishNow.com. Many students will want more instruction from a Teacher after they see the course demonstrated on a computer. The Teacher will get the most students by advertising the web site www.FreeEnglishNow.com at schools (universities) and other places where people want to learn English. Always put your name on the advertisement. You can print the advertising material from Tell someone else on the Home page.
Do not teach English rules (grammar) in your class. Use the class for conversation practice only. (Follow the suggestions in the INSTRUCTOR'S GUIDE for conversation lessons. Also see the link The place for grammar and writing in spoken language study.) The more you teach about English rules, the less successful your students will be in speaking English.
Please notice that according to the Terms of Use we do not guarantee that a Teacher will always be given the right to copy our material in the future.
Why does SPOKEN ENGLISH LEARNED QUICKLY work so well?
SPOKEN ENGLISH LEARNED QUICKLY teaches a student how to speak English in a short period of time because of one reason. The entire lesson is spoken English. If the student studies for one hour, the student will speak English for the entire hour. (For more information regarding the advantage of spoken English for instruction, see the articles under A technical comparison of Spoken English Learned Quickly and ESL courses.) By using this course, a student can speak English two hours a day, five days a week, for nine months.
The nature of this series
In the introductory material for the student, we emphasize that these lessons will require intense effort. They are not intended to be "easy" or "fun." They were written to help motivated students learn English in a short period of time. These lessons will also be beneficial to students attempting to pass English competency exams for entrance to U.S. universities. The lessons were developed for students who are highly motivated and who will have the personal discipline to work alone.
The student will need to work hard on each lesson. Beginning students will often say that Lesson 1 is difficult. Yetoften to their surprisebeginning English students will be able to understand and use the exercise sentences at the end of two weeks. After four weeks, they will start to use English verbs correctly and will be able to construct simple sentences. This will be the case because their first introduction will be to everyday spoken English.
The first lesson is not too advanced for someone who speaks no English. However, most students have already studied English in school. Even though they may not be able to speak, they remember basic vocabulary words. Because the lessons emphasize verbal proficiency, advanced English students will benefit immensely after the first lesson.
We recommend that most students spend two weeks on each lesson. By the end of the first week, the student should be able to respond to all of the exercises without reading the printed lesson. By the end of the second week, they should be able to respond fluently to the Lesson Text and all exercises without looking at the written lesson. (However, for reading and pronunciation practice, they will always read from the Lesson Text.) An advanced student may do an entire lesson in a single week.
The teacher can meet for one or two hours each week with 1-10 students.
SPOKEN ENGLISH LEARNED QUICKLY is unique
The typical format.
Most language courses progress from simple to difficult in successive lessons. This series does not. With the exception of Lesson 1 which is written as an introductory lesson, and Lessons 2 and 3, which present the English verb more simply, all lessons are essentially similar in complexity.
Most ESL courses teach English grammar. Thus, the first sentences a student learns use simple grammar. The lessons then move progressively to more difficult grammar. However, SPOKEN ENGLISH LEARNED QUICKLY focuses on spoken English and does not need to move from simple to difficult sentences. (Though to be honest, "simple" and "difficult" have little to do with the actual spoken language but more to do with the instructor's comprehension of the complexity of the stated grammar rules. For more information on the subject of grammar instruction, see the article Can beginning and advanced students use the same lessons?)
The purpose behind the English drills.
The recorded English drills have both design and purpose. SPOKEN ENGLISH LEARNED QUICKLY is based on the premise that we learn a foreign language best by repetition. However, the beginning English speaker is incapable of constructing adequate sentences for repetition without help. Since it is mandatory that repetition use correctly constructed English sentences, the heart of this series is its use of grammatically correct sentences on the audio recordings. In this way, from the very first lesson the student can repeat grammatically correct English sentences while practicing. This allows the student to practice correctly spoken English for two hours or more each day.
Throughout the series, the student will actually gain more English instruction by using the audio recordings than by talking with an instructor for the same amount of time. The recordings confine the student to a high frequency of repetition of correct spoken English sentences. That will build a more substantial foundation for fluent English speech than unstructured conversation with its inevitable misuse of English grammar and random use of words. However, spontaneous speaking with an instructor is invaluable in both encouraging and correcting the student.
These lessons were designed so that a beginning student can use them very effectively. But this does not mean that SPOKEN ENGLISH LEARNED QUICKLY uses simple lessons. In fact, it is very much an accelerated course. It is the constant repetition of normal English sentences that teaches the verbal skills necessary for fluent speech. That is what SPOKEN ENGLISH LEARNED QUICKLY does best. It is the reason these lessons teach spoken English so quickly and effectively.
Your two biggest challenges.
First, some of your students will assume that the class sessions you teach are more important than their time alone doing the exercises. These students will faithfully come to class but will put little effort into the spoken exercises. As a result, they will not be successful in learning spoken English. Always emphasize that the time spent doing exercises is the most important part of each lesson. The class time will merely help them use what they have already learned.
Second, after students learn the vocabulary and understand the meaning of the sentences, they often assume that they have finished the lesson. Students must realize that the lesson is not complete until they can say everything fluently. They want to quit because they understand the material in the lesson even though they cannot speak smoothly. Get them accustomed to repeating the exercises until their fluency is acceptable. At the same time, make allowance for boredom. Reviewing previous lessons will break the monotony.
An analogy of sorts.
How would you teach a talented student to become a trumpet virtuoso? Would you buy her an expensive grand piano and arrange for lessons with a renowned classical pianist? If that had been your approach, it would not be surprising if two years later she became discouraged because she still could not play the trumpet. ESL students have spent much time learning to write words, practice penmanship, role-play for job interviews and more. Yet, when going to the store or applying for work, they will evaluate their progress solely on their verbal communication skills. They are often discouraged because they see so little result after so much effort. Their conclusion is that they will never learn English. They have been practicing the piano when they needed a trumpet!
SPOKEN ENGLISH LEARNED QUICKLY will teach your students how to speak English. And it will teach them to speak in a very short period of time.
English grammar and such
By design, this course does not teach English grammar as a set of rules to memorize. The students' progress will be hampered if English grammar instruction is introduced.
The intent of this course is to teach spoken English through the verbal repetition of correctly structured sentences. We learn spoken language best through repetition.
However, SPOKEN ENGLISH LEARNED QUICKLY teaches the highest form of grammar excellence. When a student can speak fluently, using properly constructed English sentences, that student is proficient in his or her knowledge of applied English grammar.
This course very effectively teaches the English verb. Aside from basic vocabulary, the greatest fault of new English speakers is improper use of verbs. Beginning with Lesson 2, verbs are learned as spoken English in a format that gives both person and time of action. By Lesson 5, person and time of action are taught using simple sentences. Starting in Lesson 11, the verb exercises use two alternating formats so that the student is forced to think more when using the English verb. Thus, the verb is effectively taught through spoken language rather than through grammar studies.
| Are we correct? |
| You have probably read this introductory material and said to yourself, "It can't be done! You can't teach English without written assignments and grammar, and you can't use the same lessons for both beginners and advanced students." |
| Our answer is a simple challenge. This method works very well for us and teaches our students spoken English in a very short period of time. (We also have a much lighter teaching load per student because they are learning excellent spoken English on their own.) Try it for yourself and find out how well SPOKEN ENGLISH LEARNED QUICKLY works. |
